Breastfeeding myths uncovered
"Your milk is too strong or too weak for your baby". Untrue. Breast milk is always just right. It even changes as the feed progresses. The first milk or foremilk is more watery and thirst-quenching and gets steadily richer as the hindmilk comes through.
"You don't have enough". No. Do not assume that if your baby wants to feed fequently, your milk supply is inadequate. Check your feeding position and allow your baby to feed on demand, to continue stimulating your milk.
"Feeds should be limited to four-hourly intervals". Untrue. Unless your baby is feeding for very long periods - in which case, check the positioning - you should feed as often as your baby wants. A baby's appetite varies from one day to another and babies vary in the speed with which they milk the breast.
"Your baby needs extra water or milk from a bottle".Wrong. If you do this you will cause your baby to suckle less from your breast and so reduce your milk supply, setting up a vicious circle.
"Babies need additional solid food by four months or sooner". No. Breast milk is sufficient tio sustain a baby for six months or longer.
"You can't get pregnant while you are breastfeeding".Wrong. So do arrange contraception with your GP.
