General Security Information
We are often asked, "why do I hear so
much about security and fraud on the Internet".
Several things conspire to make this a newsworthy
subject. Firstly it is all very new - the global changes being swiftly
created by the Internet and E-commerce rival that of the industrial
revolution. Such speedy development attracts a lot of coverage and
as with all things new especially those that are hard to comprehend
they attract a lot of suspicion.
Most credit card fraud reported on the Internet
is clearly related to the downloading of pornography or created
by people responding to apparently amazing bargains. This type of
activity is also extremely newsworthy and none of it really comes
as much of a surprise to security organisations, police forces,
and commercial investigators around the world.
Of course you always need to take care when
revealing your credit card details to anyone - all of us have probably
experienced a shadow of doubt at some time when handing over card
details to someone (often in an unfamiliar country) and it then
disappears to the back of a shop for 10 minutes and returns with
a grubby slip to be countersigned.
Online over the last year more than 20 million
transactions have taken place with very few problems for individuals.
In reality of course your average corner-shop,
garage or restaurant has been transmitting your full credit card
details over standard telephone lines for years when they clear
your usual transactions.
